Interview with Cicely Peterson-Mangum

Cicely Peterson-Mangum is the Executive Director of Logan CDC. She will be presenting at our event, Cornerstores as Cornerstones: Building Community through Small Business

What are some of the small ways that entrepreneurs have impacted your community?

Entrepreneurs add to the unique tapestry of Logan's diverse community - from African braiding salons to Vietnamese grocery stores, there are specific goods and services that individuals can only purchase in Logan.

Small business owners have also gotten involved in the efforts to improve the quality-of-life in the community as a whole by serving on Logan CDC's committees and other community group committees.

Logan has a strong commercial corridor on North Broad Street-- how would the neighborhood be different if it had a big box store instead?

The neighborhood would lose its unique flavor and ethnic flair.

The neighborhood would not be as pedestrian friendly as it is now. Customers would simply drive into Logan and then drive back out again once they have finished shopping. They would not be able to window shop or try new stores if one big box store dominated the area. Entrepreneurs in the neighborhood would be hesitant set up shop in their own community for fear of competition from the big box.

What are some good, practical ways for small businesses to reach out to their communities?

"Open house" type events with wine/juice and cheese to showcase goods and services, e-newsletters, volunteer with local community groups, host community meetings, host private shopping parties.

Other than shopping, what are some other ways for people to help the small businesses in their neighborhoods?

Word of mouth, testimonial letters, letters to the editor about good shopping experience or customer service, offer to host meeting or event at shop (which gives others opportunity to visit store)

Give feedback to the store owners about what you like or do not like so that they can better meet your needs.
