Empowerment Group’s Youth Entrepreneurship Program provides dynamic business education to the city’s next generation of entrepreneurs.

We believe that young innovators can impact their communities, and that they are best taught by hands-on participation. Our training introduces youth to key aspects of business development, management, leadership, and communication. The students use what they learn to build business projects that address unmet needs in their neighborhoods.

Our Youth Entrepreneurship Program partners with organizations throughout the city. We provide our services on site, and can adapt our curriculum to meet the specific needs of any organization and its youth. We serve both in-school and out-of-school youth, ages 14-24. Here are our basic course offerings:

 Introduction to Entrepreneurship (6 hours):
Minimize

Often youth see their communities as places with little economic activity, and little hope for viable careers later in life. In this introductory course, we present entrepreneurship as an opportunity to create positive change, starting with the individual. Students look at examples of entrepreneurship in their own community, brainstorm changes that new business can bring, and explore ways to use their talents for a greater good.

  • The Entrepreneur Next Door: Sometimes the best education starts at home. We team up with local entrepreneurs to teach students to take their own communities as case studies to identify and assess local business.

  • Innovation & Change: Many young Philadelphians don’t see much opportunity to thrive in their own neighborhoods. We show students local examples of innovation, and people who have used creativity to make positive change.

  • Opportunity Assessment: After looking at local success stories, students examine their neighborhoods’ potential to host thriving new businesses.

 Basics of Entrepreneurship (12 hours):
Minimize

Many of our students have valuable talents and ideas but don’t know how to capitalize on them. In this course, we advance the students’ concept of entrepreneurship and introduce basic marketing. By conducting market research, the students develop stronger communication skills and identify more needs in their communities. This course helps students develop some of the tools and transferable skills necessary to create positive change.

  • Value Proposition: Students learn basic business vocabulary, engage in discussion of essential business concepts, and develop a value proposition for their business.

  • Your Neighbor as Your Customer: After learning basic marketing concepts, students conduct market research surveys to identify target markets, learn to segment these markets, and evaluate product demands.

  • Marketing: It’s time to put research to practice. Students design marketing material specifically catered to their target market and learn the basics of customer service.

 Experiences in Entrepreneurship (24 hours):
Minimize

Our training is most effective when youth are engaged in real business, putting their knowledge into practice. Our Turn-key Series builds on the fundamentals of business, advances students’ understanding of finance, and allows them to experience business ownership. This project-driven class incorporates guest speakers, group work, public presentations, and real youth business ventures.

  • Matters of Money: Students improve their knowledge of budgeting, profit and loss, break even analysis, financial planning, income, and saving through real management experience.

  • Presentations: Students refine their business ideas and cultivate their communication skills by giving oral presentations about their businesses.

  • Real Business Experience: After identifying needs in their communities, and learning basic business strategies, students put their lessons into practice. The group creates a business project with a positive impact on their community, and develops skills through actually operating a business.

Empowerment Group strives to provide services that meet the individual needs of each partner organization. We can tailor our curriculum to fit the specific format or meet the unique needs of any youth group. In the past, we have developed one-time or short-series seminars, workshops, and special events to help individual sites.

You understand the most pressing needs of your youth, and we would love to introduce them to the opportunities that come from business ownership. Here are some of the potential ways we could work together:

  • Topical Workshops or Seminars: We can fit our introduction to entrepreneurship, finance, business-writing, or other topics in business into your curriculum.

  • Business Plan Competition: Games and competition often cultivate creative business thinking with your youth. We can organize a challenge your youth won’t forget.

  • Field Trips or Special Events: Sometimes creativity is best inspired by breaking routine. We can organize a special event or a visit to a local business to inspire your budding entrepreneurs.
